Abe Schwartz (1881-1963) was a fiddler, composer, songwriter, and band leader who was arguably the key figure in defining the modern American klezmer sound. Working in the early days of recording, the young immigrant transformed the folkloric sounds of Yiddish music into a sophisticated big band sound that embraced American instruments such as the saxophone and banjo, absorbing American sounds from jazz to John Phillip Sousa. He made hundreds of recordings under his own name and several pseudonyms. He wrote hit songs for Yiddish vaudeville and adapted, updated, and copyrighted numerous traditional klezmer tunes. He hired and mentored such great musicians as Naftule Brandwein, Shloimke Beckerman, and Dave Tarras. Ultimately, he crafted the repertoire, style, and taste of modern klezmer ensembles.
Maia Brown, a member of the anti-fascist Yiddish trio, Brivele, is a Yiddish musician, dance leader, and educator on unceded Duwamish, Coast Salish land in Seattle.
Marc Gavin has performed with the Cuban charanga band Yerbabuena, the Volunteer Park Conservatory Orchestra, the Young Composers Collective, Freestyle Candela, his own jazz quartet, and more recently with the Vashon-Murray Chamber Orchestra.
Kim Goldov began playing with the Freylakh Klezmer Band in 1987, playing for numerous weddings
and bar/bas mitzvas, and touring the US, Canada, and Japan. He was a member of the Bucharest Drinking Team and Malke and the Boychiks and currently performs with The Talne Trio and SeaMuse.
Darren Loucas is a singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, a co-founder of the BB Award-winning NW blues outfit, The Jelly Rollers, and leader of both The Automat and The Luz Bones.
The Klein Party celebrates and plays “klezmerish music from All the Old Countries with a jazz sensibility and rock-and-roll exuberance.” Members include Eric Ray Anderson (ukulele & vocals), Joe Casalini (bass), Brandon Campbell (saxophones), David Gassner (vocals), Mark Lutwak (accordion & piano), Sabrina Pope (clarinet), and Amber Wolfe (vocals & percussion). Over the past seven years, the Klein Party has played to thousands of enthusiastic listeners and dancers at the Royal Room, Pink Door, Northwest Folklife Festival, Washington Performance Center, Kirkland Performance Center, Vashon Center for the Arts, and many farmers' markets, holiday parties, picnics, International Ice Cream Day, and many, many live streams.
